Use this when you know average demand and your safety buffer.

03 · Understand the result

A useful number, with its assumptions visible

The calculator separates expected lead-time demand from the extra protection you choose. Review the inputs whenever demand patterns or supplier performance change.

Average demand × lead time + safety buffer4 × 7 + 10 = 38
01

Use representative demand

Choose a recent period that reflects normal trading. Remove one-off events only when you can explain why they will not recur.

02

Measure real lead time

Count from placing the purchase order until the stock is actually received and usable—not merely dispatched.

03

Treat the buffer honestly

The guided coverage buffer is a practical starting point. Volatile or critical items may require a more rigorous safety-stock method.

Questions people ask before using a reorder point

Is the reorder point the amount I should buy?

No. It is the stock level that triggers action. Order quantity depends on supplier minimums, available space, cash, order costs, and expected future demand.

Should I use days or weeks?

Use either, but keep average demand, lead time, and extra coverage in the same period. Daily inputs are often easier when supplier lead times are measured in days.

What counts as usable stock?

Stock available to meet demand. Consider excluding damaged, expired, reserved, or otherwise unavailable units, and review open purchase orders separately.

How often should I update the result?

Review it when demand, supplier lead time, seasonality, or service expectations change—and on a regular cadence for important items.
